IRB Authorization Agreements

Preparing for an IRB Authorization Agreement (IAA)

An IAA is applicable to multisite, collaborative research.

Templates

Review the templates and discuss any special requirements with the IRB of Record.

External IAA Submissions

Specific information is required to be submitted in the protocol management system and reviewed by the WVU IRB before research can begin when WVU is NOT the IRB of Record:

  • Completed IAA
  • IRB of Record Approval Letter
  • Approved Protocol
  • Approved Informed Consent Form with WVU language
  • Ancillary Review Approvals from WVU (PRMC, IBC, Tissue Banking, etc)
  • Letter of Permission (may be required in some cases)

Procedures

When WVU IS the IRB of Record (Reviewing IRB)

  1. Contact WVU OHRP to discuss the project and begin work on the WVU IAA template (DOCX).
  2. Send the form to the relying institution for review and signature.
  3. Send the signed form to WVU OHRP.
  4. WVU OHRP obtains institutional approval from the Research Office.
  5. Continue with registration in IREx. (IREx is required by WVU)

When WVU is NOT the IRB of Record (Relying IRB)

  1. Contact WVU OHRP and begin work on the External IAA template (DOCX).
  2. Send the form to the relying institution for review and signature.
  3. Send the signed form to WVU OHRP.
  4. WVU OHRP facilitates and obtains institutional approval (Legal Counsel must review as well as the Research Office).
  5. If modifications are required, the PI will receive notification.
  6. Continue with registration in the applicable platform or as appropriate for the research.
